Art Gallery M84 is pleased to present “Nude Women by Ryu Hanabusa, Fuyuki Hattori, Shoji Ueda, and Others,” a photography exhibition starting on Monday, July 24, 2023.
This exhibition of works is the 130th exhibition to be held at Art Gallery M84. The collection of Yoshio Hattori, an art collector, includes “monochrome works (with some color works) by Japanese artists such as Ryu Hanabusa, Fuyuki Hattori and Shoji Ueda, who pursued the expression of female beauty.The exhibition will feature approximately 35 works carefully selected from rare photographs that are no longer available on the market and rare photographs that are no longer accessible to the public.We hope you will take this opportunity to view these works, all of which are by artists who are considered to be masters of their craft. Admission is limited to adults.
Yoshio Hattori, known as the world’s greatest collector of Cardin, is also one of Japan’s leading art collectors. The works exhibited in this exhibition have been selected, purchased, and collected from galleries in Japan over the years.

【Hanabusa Lyu】
Born in Osaka in 1949. After studying fashion design, worked as an editor of a photography magazine and assistant to a photographer before becoming a freelance photographer. 1970: Debuted with the exhibition “Another Something” at Nikon Salon in Ginza, Tokyo. 1978: Lived in Paris for four years. Since then, he has worked mainly in Tokyo and Paris. In 1991, he moved back to Paris, where he stayed for eight years. In 2008, he received the Press Award from the Paris Convention and Visitors Bureau for his contribution to tourism in Paris.
【Fuyuki Hattori】
Born in Hokkaido, Japan in 1955, Fuyuki Hattori graduated from the Department of Photography, Nihon University College of Art in 1978. Influenced by the still-life photographs of Czechoslovakian photographer Josef Sudek, he began working with flowers and vases as his subjects during his university years. Later, he began working on a series of nude works. Even though he has shifted to another subject, “the body that exudes pleasure and eroticism,” his approach to the human body as a “still life” has remained consistent. By condensing not only the aesthetic aspect of photography, but also its history itself into the present, he submits the question of what photography is.
【Ueda Shoji】
Born in Tottori Prefecture in 1913. Although his production photography was interrupted by the realism movement that became mainstream in the 1950s, the publication of his 1971 photo collection “Doyo Ryoki” (Children’s Almanac) brought about a reevaluation of his work both in Japan and abroad. His work has been particularly well received in Europe, where he was invited to participate in the Arles International Festival of Photography in 1978 and 1983. Among his many works, his “Dunes Series” featuring the Tottori Sand Dunes is well known. In 1994, he created the CD jacket for Masaharu Fukuyama’s “HELLO”; in 1996, he was awarded the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres of the Republic of France; in 2000, he passed away at the age of 87.
【Nobuyoshi Araki】
Born in Tokyo in 1940. Known by the nickname “Araki,” he wears round-rimmed black glasses as his trademark. He is known as “Araki,” and his trademark is a pair of round-rimmed black glasses. He has a unique worldview full of intense eroticism and Thanatos (life and death), including bewitching flowers and bondage nudes. After graduating from the Department of Photography and Printing Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Chiba University, he began his career as a photographer at Dentsu, where he attracted attention with his photo collection “Satchin,” which won the first Taiyo Award in 1964. His “Sentimental Journey,” a collection of photographs taken on his honeymoon with his late beloved wife Yoko, pioneered a new genre of “private photography” and became his masterpiece. In 2008, he was awarded the Austrian Order of Science and Arts for his contributions to the arts. He is highly regarded as one of Japan’s leading photographers.
【Hideki Fujii】
Born in Tokyo in 1934. Entered the Department of Photography at Nihon University College of Art. In 1963, he became an independent freelance photographer and established Studio F in 1965. In 1977, Sayoko Yamaguchi’s photograph was used for the cover of Steely Dan’s sixth album, “Aija”. In 2002, she became the principal of the Kure Gakuen College of Photography and Art of Japan. In 2007, he was appointed as an advisor to the NPO All Japan Welfare Photography Association. 2010: Died at the age of 75.
【Yoshihiko Ueda】
Born in Hyogo Prefecture in 1957, Ueda graduated from the Osaka School of Visual Arts in 1979, and studied under photographers Masanobu Fukuda and Taiji Arita from 1979 to 1981. He has received numerous awards for his advertising work, including the Tokyo ADC Award, the New York ADC Award, the Cannes Graphic Silver Prize, and the Asahi Advertising Award. On the other hand, as an artist, his representative works include “QUINAULT,” a series of photographs of sacred Native American forests; “AMAGATSU,” a portrait of avant-garde butoh dancer Ushiro Tenji, who hosts “Sankai Juku”; “PORTRAIT,” a series of photographs of 39 famous Japanese people, including Takaaki Yoshimoto, Shotaro Yasuoka, and Nagisa Oshima. and “at HOME,” in which he turned his camera on his own family.
